The universe reveals its magic only when you are not trying to control it and when you are not expecting it

Man does not possess creative powers, he is possessed by them.”
Carl Gustav Jung

~ What is missing? ~

We are so absorbed and contained by our cultural prescriptiveness that we do not notice how we everywhere impose ourselves without realizing how one-sided and reductionist we are, how detached and set aside from wilderness we are, how indifferent towards real alternatives available to experience and experimentation we are, how we tend to reduce our lives to programmes devoid of anomaly. Magic is reachable only by unfollowing of this conditioned functioning, by non-complying with it, by going against its current.

It is my contention that magic is not to be sought at all and is not recognizable as such. To seek magic is to miss the point entirely. It never was about finding magic, it always was about allowing magic find you. Allowing – implies passiveness, non-resistance, cooperation, serving as a medium, quite what we might term ”feminine qualities”, which is no coincidence. The rather feminine quality of releasing or receiving something is closer to magic than rather masculine quality of capturing or conquering something. Magic is more like a mysterious lady than a bearded elder.

There is too much control, management and intentional manipulation of the occurences of life for a magic to fit in. We don’t want in our lives what we cannot control, manipulate, navigate, predict or pacify. Yet magic is just that – it cannot be controlled, manipulated, navigated, predicted or pacified. It must remain as it is, it cannot be as we wish it to be or how we wish it to be. When magic comes in, atypical things happen, and while, at first, it is often hard to explain them, they frequently bring in something very precious – stimulating impressions of freshness, excitement, mystery, novelty, inspiration, curiosity, authenticity and of being alive which push us further into new territories.

Focusing on what we didn’t consider before, exploring what we have no idea about, expecting the unexpected, walking the pathless road, having no plan, acting without instruction, journeying with no agenda – that’s how magic is reachable. Being like a transparent mirror, you can reflect anything.

~ How is magic spoiled? ~

Ideology-possessed man are looking at the sky hoping to see there something that could resemble what they allready see within themselves. Magic-sensitive men are allowing themselves to be caught in by the universe in moments of their own forgetfulness. They receive unexpected and unrequested gifts that arrogant men will never pay attention to, even if it was laying in front of their faces.

Magic, in this sense, means being receptive to what is ultimately unknown and unpredictable. If you can trust it, you allow magic to enter. If not, magic passes away unnoticed. What ideology-possessed men are doing, is the reverse of the magic, it is killing of the magic. It is being done through such endeavours as religion, organized politics, system of education, many types of industries and institutions. Centralized management, power structures, ”the machine”, intrusive establishments, oppresive systems – is what spoils magic. Magic is like if it had a life of its own, but only when it is nourished, and not replaced by rituals. The more you are obsessed with control,  the less you are entitled to magic. Magic abhors pretentious people, control freaks, small-minded persons, maniacs and imitators.

~ Who can teach you about magic? ~

To bring about change in the universe in accordance with your will seems to me to be misunderstanding the relationship between the individual and the universe. In my relationship with the universe, I do tend to see myself as very much the Junior Partner. I don’t want to impose my will on the universe, I’d rather the universe imposed its will on me. I would rather that what I wanted was more in tune with what the universe wanted.”
Alan Moore

We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.”
Joseph Campbell

The truth is a snare: you cannot have it, without being caught. You cannot have the truth in such a way that you catch it, but only in such a way that it catches you.”
Søren Kierkegaard

Don’t fight forces, use them.”
Buckminster Fuller

Who can free himself from achievement, and from fame, descend and be lost, amid the masses of men? He will flow like Tao, unseen, he will go about like Life itself with no name and no home. Simple he is, without distinction. To all appearances he is a fool. His steps leave no trace. He has no power. He achieves nothing, has no reputation. Since he judges no one no one judges him. Such is the perfect man. His boat is empty.”
Chuang Tzu

~ What is magic, then? ~

Magic is when something unplanned happens, which is more ‘cool’ than anything you planned or imagined to happen… Magic is a distraction that turns you away from your own little, egotic world… Magic is an uncontrollable spark of creativity which comes from the inside and slips to the outside… Magic is a moment of forgetfulness, when bars are removed, boundaries ignored and the mask taken off… Magic is what you allow to show yourself in your life… Magic is a mind open to shifts, calls, ideas and challenges… Magic is trusting one’s self to go with the flow… Magic is the fact that you never know what happens next… Magic is a journey of self-discovery and transformation but also of self-doubt and confusion… Magic is every moment, because it brings change and opportunity and one moment can be a game-changer…

When you look for magic, you miss ”it” already staring at you. When you face magic, it is not because you were looking for it. Magic is allready there waiting all the time, it can disclose itself any moment, but it doesn’t have to. It is up to you whether you let lose yourself in it or you reject it trying to subjugate it. Ultimately: magic is when you forget about yourself or even when you abandon yourself entirely, just to eventually find yourself again and anew.

~ ”Frozen” by Madonna ~

You only see what your eyes want to see
How can life be what you want it to be
You’re frozen
When your heart’s not open

You’re so consumed with how much you get
You waste your time with hate and regret
You’re broken
When your heart’s not open

Mmmmmm, if I could melt your heart
Mmmmmm, we’d never be apart
Mmmmmm, give yourself to me
Mmmmmm, you hold the key

Now there’s no point in placing the blame
And you should know I suffer the same
If I lose you
My heart will be broken

Love is a bird, she needs to fly
Let all the hurt inside of you die
You’re frozen
When your heart’s not open

( lyrics by Madonna and Patrick Leonard )

Big moments are more precious than big goals. Ultimately, what you are left with is how alive you feel and not how bigger-than-life you try to be.

  1. I am honoured to hear this. I never know if these posts aren’t too idiosyncratic, abstract and chaotic, and if they are understandable at all. I work in a rather unusual manner, I have a general vision of most of the upcoming posts in advance, it’s mostly a matter of how to actualize it. It is all very subjective, but one thing that should be known is that my posts are meant to be perceived as one message but splitted into parts. Every post is rooted in my experience and is a part of continous process of discovery and realization, therefore every post is only a small measure of what is really happening out there to me. What I am striving for is the integrity of my conclusions and coherency of my views. This blog helps me to build more integrated relationship with my own mind’s works. Peace with the self = peace with the world, hopefully.

So true. It’s so nice to read about the elusive subject of magic by someone who clearly knows what they are talking about.

It truly is a situation of the more we allow space for the anomalous & the possible, the more we see its subtle workings. And the more we bare down on the programmed consensus reality, the more we are sure to miss the finer elements of consciousness, which indeed compose the larger reality.

Thank you for this thoughtful post!

  3. I sincerely appreciate your response.

Besides what’s been said here allready by me and you, you can also simply observe what an awesome role has “negative capacity” played in the history of humankind – in form of challenging authority, questioning tradition, asking provoking questions, embarking on distant dangerous journeys, trying to construct seemingly impossible devices, and so many others. Whether it be Socrates, Galileo, da Vinci, Jesus, Darwin or Lennon, something or someone always pops up to send message “you have not seen anything yet”.

I think a great deal of human activity is about blocking the possible, the alternative, the experimental, the radical, the unrestricted, the playful and turning ourselves into machines, objects, approximations of normal, apolitical private consumers. I maintain that our socially constructed reality is highly crude, imposing and intimidating. There is an overwhelming amount of forces directed to bully us on every occasion. A lot of institutions feel threatening, alienating and undesirable to many of us. Urban desings, schools, big industries, military or international relations are all conspicuously inhumane. We should be asking ourselves a question: why should abstract forces ( like self-regulated markets or money ) which are human creations, be allowed to so hegemonically infiltrate and orientate our lives? That’s one of the things we should all be thinking about right now.
